SIU clears Cobourg police officers in shooting inside hospital
Two Cobourg Police officers have been cleared of wrongdoing following a Special Investigations Unit probe of the Oct. 27, 2017 shooting inside the Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg that left a man and his wife dead.
The officers shot more than 20 times at Tom Ryan, 70, in a shootout inside the hospital after he had killed his wife Helen Ryan, 76, inside the hospital at about 11 p.m. that night.
Following a more than year-long investigation, the province’s police watchdog determined there are no grounds to lay criminal charges against the officers and their actions in the shootout were justified.
