- JOANNE CULLEY joanne.culley@sympatico.ca

The 23rd annual Christmas Show and Sale of the Kawartha Potters’ Guild will take place on Friday from 2 to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 993 Talwood Dr., with free admission and a free door prize draw.

There will be a wide selection of pottery creations from this community of talented and enthusiastic potters, including Priya Harding, Tanya Couch, J. Connell-Northey, Cathy Allen, Dorothy Meddows-Taylor and more.

“Members of the Kawartha Potters’ Guild are working diligently in their studios creating one-of-a-kind gifts for the upcoming Christmas season,” says Lillian Forester, past chairwoman. “They’re making beautiful, functional ceramic mugs, bowls, soap dispensers, candleholders, vases, and more, with something for those hard-to-buy-for on your gift list. And, of course, a vast selection of tree ornaments. For the teacher on your list, kids and grandkids, in-laws, the selection is endless of unique pieces. No two are exactly alike.”

On the Move Show

The opening reception for the On the Move: Travelling through the Ages show takes place Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Kawartha Artists’ Gallery and Studio, 420 O’Connell Rd. with refreshments and artists present. The show features paintings on the theme of transportation, from canoes and railways through to cars and space travel.

Member Judith Graham will have some of her works on display. She has always created art along with studying science. She works mostly with acrylics but considers herself generally a mixed-media artist. She says that her primary subject matter is the human condition.

“I am mostly self-taught, but I have taken classes in pottery, sculpture, drawing and painting,” says Graham. “I draw inspiration from our local studio tours and art galleries.”

Graham has been a member and volunteer at KAGS since 2009, and currently organizes the life drawing open studio, and attends portrait sessions and the still life group.

The show runs until Dec. 21, then continues from Jan. 2 to 20 at the gallery, open Wednesdays to Sundays, 1 to 4 p.m. For more information, please call 705-7412817, visit www.kawarthaartists.org or like them on Facebook.

Artisans Centre

This year the members of Artisans Centre Peterborough were challenged to express the theme of “River” in a unique piece of work. Eighteen pieces of art were entered in the challenge from all four member guilds. Those who attended the Artisanity Show and Sale were asked to vote for the work they felt best portrayed a river. The winner was a gourd entitled Along the River’s Edge created by Barbara Bellchambers. She painted a river image on the gourd and added a treefilled scene using pyrography.

The centre offers classes for anyone interested in learning new craft skills. A full list of classes and registration is on the website www.artisanscentre.ca.
