How could St. Michael’s be unaware of the problem?

-

The revelations and reaction from the tales of abuse and criminal allegations coming from St. Michael’s College School overlooks the real issue at play. It is not how long it took for the principal to call police that should end the careers of the principal and the chair, though that seems enough.

Instead, it is how a culture of abusive behaviour could have been unseen for years by professionals whose tales of excellence would suggest that impossible. St. Michael’s College has been marketed as led by a leadership team composed of the best of the best — stewards with the most highly calibrated moral compass.

Hopefully they will all agree that the more pressing issue is how the school administration could have been so ignorant. Gareth Seltzer, Toronto
