Adam Scott wins New York Sevens Rugby title
The Adam Scott Lions girls rugby team captured the Bowl Championship at the New York Sevens Rugby Tournament during a five-day tour of New York City.
Typically, the Lions do a rugby tour to Europe in the spring but coach Sandy Keay said there weren’t enough players to send a 15-a-side group overseas so they looked for another option.
Without a lot of sevens experience, the team posted a 1-2 record in pool play on Randall Island just east of Manhattan. They finished third in their pool to be placed in the Bowl Championship playoff round where they won both games to finish 3-2 overall.
“This is the first time we’ve ever entered this tournament,” Keay said.
“After our 15s season, we only had four training sessions to get them ready for the seven-a-side game, one outdoors, but we were really impressed with how quickly they understood the differences. Each performance was better than the previous one.”
Adam Scott dropped its opening game to Eastern Ontario rep B’s 19-0. They were also defeated 22-12 by Northeast Academy of Boston. The Lions rounded out pool play with a 34-12 win over Quebec City’s Faucons du CLL to finish third in their pool.
They entered into the Bowl Championship round defeating Quebec City’s Neufchatel 22-7 in the semifinals. They then beat Montreal’s Schtroumpfs 24-12 in the bowl final.
While in New York, the team visited the American Museum of Natural History, took in a Broadway show and an NHL hockey game. They toured Central Park, visited the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island as well as trekking to the top of the Rockefeller Center.
The team consisted of Aalyah Barclay, Jasmine Barraball, Marissa Booth, Sarah Booth, McKenna Campbell, Sydney Chumbley, Rylie Gerow, Maeve Hartnett, Brooke Jank, Emily Kellar, Shaelyn Livingstone, Caroline Mason, Ally Matchett, Megan McCleary, Ellie Murdock, Grace Sanderson, Paige Stupavsky and Rachael Vandenburg.
