NDP association elects new pres
The Peterborough-Kawartha NDP Riding Association has elected a new president.
David Berger was announced as the local party’s new leader on Wednesday.
“I'm excited to continue the work established by this executive and to bring new enthusiasm into our actions and organizing,” he stated in a release.
The news was delivered during the Peterborough-Kawartha Provincial and Federal New Democratic’s annual general meeting at the Peterborough Public Library on Tuesday evening.
Berger is the vice president of the Kawartha Pine Ridge Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario. He previously taught French at James Strath Public School and lead the school’s choir.
In 2013, the Newfoundland native received the new member award from EFTO Voice, the magazine of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario.
Tuesday’s meeting included keynote speeches by Marion Burton, former Peterborough and District Labour Council president, and Natalie Mehra, executive director of the Ontario Health Coalition. Members also voted to elect a new executive board for the riding association. Nearly all positions were contested.
Sean Conway is the riding’s former provincial NDP candidate and was re-elected as delegate to provincial council.
“I’m so happy to see such a unified group of community member coming together with the common goal of justice and action across Peterborough-Kawartha,” Conway wrote in a release.
