Village of Keene is filled with great gift ideas

Christmas season is in full swing in Otonabee-South Monaghan

- PAT MARCHEN KeeneNews@nexicom.net

Keene is a handy place for gift shopping and pleasantly far away from the garish chain stores of suburbia. There are at least four places in the village where you can find unique gifts and plenty of things to ooh and ahh over.

Patricia’s carries Victorian nighties, gifts for men, quilts, linens, tableware, seasonal decor and vintage treasures. It’s open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. everyday except Sun., noon to 5 p.m.

Patricia’s has been on High Street in the village since the last millennium. This season she has gone high tech and now accepts debit and charge cards!

Allenwick Candles is new to the village, set up in the old public school to the library. Owner Jennifer Foshay makes her own soy based scented candles and sells locally crafted products including handknit socks, Simply Natural Canada soap, painted furniture and home accents. The shop is open Thurs. and Fri. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sat. and Sun. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hours will be extended the week before Christmas, opening Wed., Dec. 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Dec. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Two Small Rooms is next door in the basement of the public library. The boutique carries a trove of previously owned treasures, useful household items and clothes for all genders and ages. It is open Thurs. and Sat., noon to 3 p.m.

Book givers and lovers will find a great resource upstairs in the Gayle Nelson Room at the Keene library, the headquarters of the Otonabee South Monaghan Historical Society, which recently received the library of the late Karen Lunn.

Books about sports, history, and books by great photographers have been evaluated and priced accordingly, but right now there is a Christmas sale. The OSM society is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. Don’t delay or someone will get the book you should have. Cash only.

I walked to the market and bought another goose at .30 per lb. We have now three geese and a duck. Mrs. Philip Tennyson was here today and paid me some money Philip borrowed 18 months ago.
