An annual YMCA run has been renamed in honour of the late Peter Adams.

Adams died in September at the age of 82.

He was one of the original annual YMCA Winter Run race directors and participated in it, too.

The event is being renamed the Peter Adams Winter Run. It takes place Feb. 24.

Adams was a former Peterborough Liberal MP and MPP. He was a founding professor of geography at Trent University and was an expert on Arctic ice.

He was married to his wife Jill for 58 years and had four children and nine grandchildren.

Adams was a lifelong runner who loved to run downtown, according to Jill.

“He often said that running provided positive direction in his life,” Jill stated in a release.

Peter’s love of exercising and running started early on and he continued to run for most of his life, participating in many races, Jill stated.

delighted to have his name given to this event,” his wife wrote.

Peter had a proud history with the YMCA and his community, David Allen, president and CEO of the YMCA of Central East Ontario, stated.

“Renaming the run and altering the focus of the event aligns with our vision of strong kids, healthy families, inclusive communities,” Allen wrote.

Online registration for the Peter Adams Winter Run is available at www.ymcaofceo.ca. Early bird registration is open until Dec. 31.

Participants are encouraged to collect pledges in support of the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, which benefits kids in low-income families who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend the YMCA.

Route details will be available closer to the run.
