Bud’s Music Centre founder remembered
Bud Monahan, the musician, husband, father of five and founder of Bud’s Music Centre — which operated for nearly 50 years before it was bought out by Long & McQuade — has died. He was 88.
Mr. Monahan died on Saturday at Peterborough Regional Health Centre.
He was married to his wife, Muriel Rome, for 66 years.
The couple had five children, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Monahan opened Bud’s Music Centre in 1968.
For many years Bud’s was located in a grey building on Aylmer St. just south of the former Shoppers Drug Mart at Charlotte St.
Mr. Monahan operated the business for 23 years in total; he retired in 1991, at the age of 57.
At that time Bud’s was sold to Mr. Monahan’s son Robert and son-in-law Rod Branscombe. Donna Branscombe, Rod’s wife and Mr. Monahan’s daughter, worked there too as a bookkeeper.
The next generation operated Bud’s for a further 23 years, then retired and sold to Long & McQuade four years ago. That’s when the business moved to the large building on Aylmer St. at Townsend.
Visitation for Mr. Monahan will take place at Duffus Funeral Home on George St. S from 2 to 4 p.m. and again from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday.
The funeral mass is planned for Friday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Otonabee.
The family has asked that memorial donations be made to the Lung Association or PRHC’s intensive care unit.
