Maplehurst Bakeries adding 50 new jobs, job fair Jan. 19

- SARAH HYATT Northumberland News

COBOURG — With more demand for their cakes, Maplehurst Bakeries is expanding.

And with the move away from seasonal work, the Cobourg cake bakery is now also looking for 50 full-time, permanent local workers.

“We’ve been an employer in Northumberland County for almost 25 years, but we used to hire mainly seasonal workers based on the volume and type of cakes we made,” said Larry Brandt, manager of the Cobourg bakery.

“These days, due to customer demand and our expanded production, we are looking to hire up to 50 full-time, permanent people seeking year-round employment.”

The Cobourg bakery has been part of Weston Foods, the parent company of Maplehurst Bakeries, since 1994 — known then as the Weston Fruit Cake Co.

“Since that time, the bakery has expanded many times, now housing five hightech production lines that produce everything from Swiss rolls, to round and square cakes, to the ever-popular fruit cake,” reads a recent release.

And in 2018, the bakery was apparently pretty busy.

More than six million eggs, almost a million kilograms of flour and 1.6 million kilograms of sugar were used at the bakery; between just May and November of last year, it’s said that roughly 1.4 million fruit cakes were made.

The bakery held job fairs on Thursday and Friday in Cobourg and Oshawa and is holding another in Cobourg on Jan. 19.

“We’re thrilled to be able to contribute to the local economy,” said Brandt. “And being able to offer day and afternoon shifts is really the icing on the cake.”

The bakery is seeking production labourers available for both day shifts (7 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and afternoon shifts (3 p.m. to 11 p.m.).

Staff say that conditional job offers will be made on the spot at the three upcoming job fairs (two pieces of identification, including one government-issued piece of identification, are required to receive a conditional offer).

The Jan. 19 job fair runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Maplehurst Bakeries in Cobourg, located at 740 Division St. in the Northam Industrial Park, Bldg. 1 W.
