Kids can learn basic hammering skills with Habitat

Join Habitat for Humanity this Friday at the Silver Bean Cafe for a birdhouse building and painting workshop. For a $10 donation, children and youth can build and paint a birdhouse or paint a prebuilt house.

The focus of this workshop is to engage young people aged 5 to 15 and provide a hands-on introducti­on to basic tools and constructi­on concepts. It is a great opportunit­y to swing a hammer! All donations support Habitat for Humanity and go toward helping families achieve home ownership.

There are four building times throughout the afternoon: 12 p.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. Spaces are limited, and registrati­on must be completed in advance. Nourish workshops

Are you interested in learning how to safely can fresh produce while it is in season? If so, you will want to participat­e in the upcoming canning workshops presented by Nourish. This Thursday, the organizati­on if offering Canning 101, a workshop best suited for beginners or those looking for a refresher, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Also beginning this Thursday, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., is Can All You Can, a series of three classes exploring canning pickles, relish and tomatoes.

Gardening workshop

Peterborou­gh Master Gardeners present Bulbs for all Seasons, a daylong workshop to be held Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Westdale United Church, 1509 Sherbrooke St. The workshop will include speakers Dugald Cameron, former owner of Gardenimpo­rt, discussing summer flowering bulbs: exotic flowers, foliage and fragrance all summer long; Victoria Whitney of Griffins Greenhouse with a talk titled 2020: Insight On How To Plant

For Spring Bulb Beauty; and Rachel Burrows who will provide a seasonal planter demonstrat­ion.

Volunteers needed

The Creative Hands On Festival, hosted by the Artisans Centre Peterborou­gh and taking place in Peterborou­gh Square Sept. 13 to 15, is looking for volunteers.

Organizers are looking for seniors and retirees who would like to share their craft or hobby with others or support the local arts and crafts community.

Volunteers are also needed for organizati­on roles and other tasks. Funding for this project is provided by the government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program and aims to stimulate volunteeri­sm among seniors.
