Peterborough County 4-H members to visit England

- PAT MARCHEN KeeneNews@nexicom.net

Peterborough County 4-H beef club members are doing well in the showmanship category, so well that one of them, Katie Elmhirst of Indian River, travelled to England last year to show off her skills.

This year, showmanship champs Brent Clysedale, of Keene, and Abby Anderson, of Peterborough, will go to England. There they will stay on farms, exhibit calves and tour the country. In return, three young English farmers will come to the Royal Winter Fair in November to show calves.

These kids love to show cattle and know how to do it well.

Diaries of John Graham Weir, 1844-1925

In 1920, John Graham Weir and his wife Lovina moved from their farm in Otonabee to Romaine Street. They bought the house from Captain Carson, a former steamboat captain. 1920 Aug. 20, Fri. Today Lovina and I went on the train and boat to our cottage on Stoney Lake. We arrived at our cottage at one o’clock and found everything all right. 1920 Aug. 25 This forenoon I hung a white flag on the flagpole and the “Empress” came for us and we came home after having a very good time. 1921 Aug. 19, Fri. This morning Michael and Paddy Sullivan came in their car and took me to the Cobourg Horse Show. We had a really good time. We inspected one of the two large ferries that goes between Rochester and Cobourg daily. We came from Cobourg to Peterborough in 90 minutes. 1921 Aug. 20 I went to market this morning and got some things. This has been another fine day. 1921 Aug. 22 Yesterday forenoon we attended service at All Saints Church. Mr. Pappin was here a while in the afternoon. 1921 Aug. 23 This afternoon I went over to Mr. Pappin. He and his brother-in-law, the Dr., showed me their garden of vegetables and flowers, the best I ever seen. 1921 Aug. 25 Today I walked to the farm to see Mr. and Mrs. Lowes. The horses and farm crops and the corn, buckwheat and roots are very good. I also visited Mr. and Mrs. Hodson. Mrs. Landry went away this evening. She and her daughter have been here three weeks.
