Astronomy
The Peterborough Astronomical Association (PAA) meets Friday at the Rotary Education Centre Guest Services Building at Riverview Park Zoo at 7 p.m.
The PAA is again offering their Novice Astronomy Classes at 6 p.m. prior to the main meeting. These 45-minute classes focus on the practical aspects of learning astronomy by introducing astronomy related subjects at a very basic level in a logical sequence. This month's session, The Solar System, will look at our sun, the planets around it and their moons and discuss which planets and moons hold the best possibilities for life. It will finish up with a look at comets, asteroids and meteorites.
The main presentation starting shortly after 7 p.m., features a Skype presentation with Dr. Nienke van der Marel, discussing Zooming into The Structures Of Planet-Forming Disks With The Atacama Large Millimetre/Submillimetre Array (ALMA). Van der Marel is a National Research Council Fellow at the National Research Council of Canada, Herzberg Astronomy and Astrophysics Research Centre in Victoria, B.C. His presentation is an overview of recent ALMA results and their consequences in terms of our understanding of planet formation. ALMA, completed in 2011, is located in the Atacama Desert in North Eastern Chile at 5,000 metres above sea level.
Community members are invited to attend this all ages meeting. It is an opportunity to check out the PAA and what it has to offer, all at no cost. The venue is barrier free.
