Pop-up kicks off Public Energy season
Performances to be held at several local venues
Public Energy Performing Arts has announced their 20192020 season. It features seven different performance events, including two festivals, a free outdoor installation and mainstage events at three downtown theatres. For 26 years, Public Energy has been dedicated to supporting the creation, touring and presentation of innovation contemporary performance arts.
The first performance takes place this weekend and is a popup living installation titled “Trophy,” in Fleming Park, 427 Aylmer St. On Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m., audience members can move from tent to tent listening to stories that capture turning points in our lives.
Other performances this season cover a variety of themes in a range of disciplines. Kaha:wi Dance Theatre will perform “The Mush Hole” at Market Hall in November, which addresses the devastation of residential school with a thoughtprovoking dance performance.
Precarious2: Peterborough ArtsWORK Festival, takes place throughout November and December, and features more than 50 artists, with performances at multiple venues throughout downtown. In January, New Stages Theatre presents “Every Brilliant Thing,” a comedy-drama performance at The Theatre on King.
Broadleaf Theatre will be presenting “The Chemical Valley Project” in March, a documentary theatre work about Indigenous activists in Sarnia Chemical Valley.
In April, Public Energy presents the 23rd Emergency Festival, which celebrates new performance works by local artists.
The final event of the season is a performance in May by Montreal urban dance company Ebnflõh, titled “In-Ward,” taking place at Showplace Performance Centre.
In addition to performance events, Public Energy’s season also includes many outreach activities, including post-show question periods with artists, a school show, and artist-led classes and workshops in the community.

Fall Canning Workshop
Learning safe canning techniques is the focus of the Fall Canning Series presented by Nourish. During three classes, participants will learn to can seasonal fruits and vegetables from the Peterborough Downtown Farmers’ Market. Workshops begin this Thursday and continue 10 and 17 at Peterborough Public Health, 185 King St.
Afternoon classes take place from 1 to 3 p.m., while the evening classes run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Specific recipes will depend on the fresh produce available. Workshops are free, but registration is required, and participants should be available for all three classes. Farmers’ Market Camp
Camp Kawartha presents their second season of Farmers’ Market Day Camp at the Peterborough Regional Farmers’ Market in downtown Peterborough. Children, ages 6 to 11 years old, will enjoy three hours of outdoor play and adventure learning on several Saturdays during October and November.
The market will be the camp home base, but children will also spend a significant amount of time enjoying the urban green spaces around the market. The first Day Camp takes place this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and continues Oct. 19, Nov. 2 and 16. Cost is $100 per child and participants must register for all four dates.
