Wesley United Church raises roof with musical fundraiser

‘Old Town Road,’ as sung by a little girl, is a hit

Wesley United needs some repairs to its steeple. So, the church decided to have a talent show. It was a great gathering showcasing the talents of those in the church community.

The show started with a skit featuring Rev. Rodney SmithMerkley, Mike Chapman, Anna and Keith.

The Northey family came next. There was dad Doug on his harmonica with his two sons, John and Ken, on guitar. They sang. They played. The people were rocking in their seats with “Oh Them Golden Slippers” on the harmonica. Rachel Northey, however, stole the show from her uncle, dad and grandpa. It took her a while to realize that there were 100 pairs of eyes watching her. With the support of her dad and aunt, she started singing, and “Old Town Road” became everyone’s favourite song that evening.

Garaint Roberts, a member of Wesley United as well, sang three songs starting with “The Rose.” He was followed by Jasmine Murray who sang “What a Wonderful World” and “What the World Needs Now.” Gary Williams, who has sung at Ontario Place and Canada’s Wonderland, performed tunes such as “I Saw the Light,” “When I’m Sixty Four” and “Into the Great Wide Open.”

A lunch was served to those attending the evening performance followed by a Christian rock band — goodbyeruins — who raised the roof, but didn’t damage the steeple further.

The talent show may be over but more activities are on the way. The Fall Harvest Tea will happen on Oct. 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Homemade soup, sandwiches and dessert will be waiting for you for a $10 ticket. A bake sale with meat pies and local vendors will also be tempting you. The church is still looking for local crafters. The Hall’s Bridge Players are back on stage performing “Drinking Habits” by Tom Smith. In the play, two nuns at the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing have a secret plan to keep the convent’s doors open. “Accusations, mistaken identities and romances run wild in this traditional laugh-out-loud farce,” according to the Buckhorn Community Centre website.

Tickets are on sale now. Call 705-657-8833 or buy tickets in person at the Buckhorn Community Centre. Dates of the play are Friday through Sunday, Nov. 1-3 and Nov. 8-10.
