Racewalker Seaman 34th at world’s
Peterborough’s Rachel Seaman placed 34th in the 20-kilometre racewalk in her return to the IAAF World Track and Field Championships on Sunday night in Doha, Qatar.
Seaman, 33, placed 13th at her last world championships in Beijing, China in 2015. It was her best performance in World Championship or Olympic competition.
Then two torn hamstrings forced her to withdraw from the 2016 Rio Olympics. Injuries, struggles with depression and giving birth to her second child caused Seaman to miss more than three years of competition.
She returned to competition in January hoping to get back to the worlds and eventually the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She qualified for the worlds at a U.S. racewalk championship in March.
Seaman finished the race in a time of 1:45:40. China’s Hong Lu won the event in 1:32:53.
The race started just before midnight local time because daytime temperatures have been in the mid to high 30s with humidity.
Seaman told The Examiner prior to leaving for Qatar she considered it a success just to reach the world championships given all she’s gone through since 2016. She hopes to ramp up a more competitive season in 2020 to try to qualify for her third Olympic Games.
