Johnson family yard sale benefits hospice fund

Couple also raffled off a pair of Blue Jays tickets

It is never an easy task to clean out a family member’s home. However, a Norwood family came up with a unique solution that not only helped to complete the daunting task but it also helped to raise a some money for a local fundraising effort.

Many in Norwood will know the names of Don and Doris Johnson. The local couple called Norwood home for many decades. With Don passing away in 2017 and Doris recently moving into a local care home, the Johnson family were faced with the task of emptying the family home to prepare it for sale.

The idea of hosting a yard sale seemed the way to go; however the family decided to “take it up a step” and donated all the proceeds from the sale to the Norwood Hospice committee.

Hospice committee members were on hand to help the hundreds of bargain seekers who dropped by on the morning of Sept. 21 to browse through the very large assortment of items available for “purchase by donation.”

Kelvin and Evelyn Johnson also donated a pair of Blue Jays tickets that were auctioned off at the Hospice Variety Show

The hospice committee extends heartfelt appreciation to the Johnson family for their generosity and their wonderful community spirit.

Pathway of Fame

The Peterborough and District Pathway of Fame is a unique and permanent mark of recognition for members of the city and county who have made significant contributions in time and talent to improve their community and the quality of life of its citizens.

The Pathway held its 2019 induction ceremony recently and the Municipality of AsphodelNorwood can proudly say that one of their own is now named among the many worthy recipients. The village’s own Doug Pearcy had his name added to the Pathway this year in the category of Community Builder.

Born in Peterborough, Doug moved to Norwood with his wife Sandy in 1969 and since then his fingerprints have been all over many aspects of Norwood’s growth and development.

For many years Doug served on Peterborough County council, also as Norwood’s reeve and mayor. As a Norwood Lion for nearly 50 years he has taken an active part in numerous fundraising and community betterment projects organized by the local service club.

Doug is a 39-year member of the Norwood Legion Branch 300 where he is the current service officer, ensuring that veterans and their families receive the assistance they are entitled to.

Doug is also a Mason and has held many positions associated with the world’s oldest fraternal organization.

Doug’s community involvement continued as co-chair of the fundraising committee for Action 2000 that raised funds to help build the Asphodel Norwood Community Centre in 2004. For 14 years he also served as the chair of the management committee for Fairhaven Nursing Home and he continues today as a committee member. He is also the current chair of the Norwood hospice committee.

This is of course not a complete list of Doug’s many contributions to his hometown of Norwood over the years. Congratulations, Doug.
