NBA championship trophy coming here
On public display Sunday at Morrow Park
The NBA championship trophy won by the Toronto Raptors is coming to Peterborough on Sunday.
It’s coming to Morrow Park on Sunday, although the time hadn’t been determined as of Thursday afternoon.
The idea is to allow the people to come for free, see the trophy and have their photo taken with it.
Peterborough is one of eight cities in Ontario on a public tour of the trophy.
The trophy is in Kingston on Friday at Springer Market Square, then it travels to Toronto at Humber College for a basketball tournament on Saturday before coming to Peterborough on Sunday.
The trophy tour — sponsored by the Dairy Farmers of Canada — promotes the MilkUP brand.
The trophy is called the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy, in honour of the NBA commissioner from 1975 to 1984.
The design is a life-sized golden basketball.
The tour was announced by the Dairy Farmers of Canada late on Thursday; city staff had no details such as the time for the trophy’s visit as of Thursday afternoon.
The Dairy Farmers originally announced the location of the
stop as Del Crary Park, but city staff said the trophy will instead be in Morrow Park due to another event at Del Crary on Sunday, the CIBC Run for the Cure.
The Toronto Raptors became the first team outside of the United States to win the NBA championship on June 13 when they beat the Golden State Warriors in Oakland.
There was a large victory parade and rally in Toronto on June 17.
The basketball trophy was then toured in public in the summer in cities such as Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.
The 60-centimetre-tall trophy weighs 16 pounds and is made of sterling silver with a gold overlay.
