Successful Homecoming for Excalibur athletes

Rowing, rugby, lacrosse keep Trent teams busy at home and on the road

The busiest weekend of the Trent Excalibur’s season was filled with some strong results.

The 49th Head of the Trent Regatta and Homecoming Weekend served as the backdrop with 520 boats passing through Otonabee River over two days. While rowers took centre stage all Excalibur varsity teams were In action both at home and away.

Excalibur rowers claimed two bronze medals and a number of top 10 finishes at HOTR. It’s the first regatta of the OUA schedule where all the top schools compete.

Excalibur rowing head coach James Dyer says this is going to be a developmen­t year for Trent crews.

“We have a really young team this year who despite being young are still showing some really good speed,” said Dyer. “If we can turn a potential developmen­t year into some hardware it gives us a pretty good outlook.”

The men’s double of Spencer Kielar, who competed at world Rowing U23 Championsh­ips and the Pan Am Games this summer, and Ian Holmquist, the RBC Training Ground national champion, placed third In the men’s double. It was the first time they had rowed a double together without a single practice.

The men’s lightweigh­t coxed four placed fourth and heavyweigh­t coxed four was fifth, the lightweigh­t double sixth and the eight and single seventh.

On the women’s side, the lightweigh­t coxed four was third, the eight fifth, the coxed four and double seventh and the single 12th.

Over at Justin Chiu Stadium the Excalibur men’s rugby team got back on track with a 55-0 win over U of Toronto Blues to improve to 2-3 and keep their playoff hopes alive. They’ll close out their regular season on Oct. 19 at Queen’s.

Peterborou­gh native Emma Twohey scored In the 35th minute to lift Trent women’s soccer past RMC Paladins 1-0 on Sunday. Riley Gillespie earned the shutout as Trent outshot RMC 20-1. On Saturday the Excalibur fell 1-0 to Queen’s.

Excalibur men’s soccer also beat RMC 1-0 on Raiden Ramdial’s goal set up by Riley Patrick in the 72nd minute. Evan McLeod got the shutout as Trent outshot RMC 16-2. On Saturday, Trent drew Queen’s 0-0.

On Friday night, Trent men’s lacrosse clinched a playoff spot with a 15-6 win over the Ottawa Gee Gees at Justin Chiu to improve to 6-1. Adam Kitchen, Cole Hanrahan and Nick Chaykowsky scored three goals each.

Playing in the OUA quarterfin­al, Trent women’s rugby dropped a 71-0 decision to McMaster Marauders in Hamilton.

Excalibur women’s lacrosse continued their winning ways on the road defeating U of T 14-7 and Ontario Tech Ridgebacks 17-6. Leah Michel scored six goals and Avery DiGiorgio five goals.

Against Ontario Tech Mackenzie Robinson scored six times and Donna Ward three.
