Braheney scores in overtime for Knights win

LAKEFIELD — Elijah Brahaney scored at 5:09 into overtime from Zack Nicholson to give the North Kawartha Boyer Auto Group Knights a 5-4 win over the Lakefield Hendren Funeral Home Chiefs on Tuesday night at the Lakefield-Smith Community Centre.

Lakefield’s Dawson Turcott scored on the power play from Cole Robbins and Jeff Hawthorne with 29 seconds left in regulation play to force overtime in PJHL East Orr Division action.

The Knights opened the scoring on a goal by Karsten Leonard assisted by Kieran Flynn and Isaac Little at 7:33 in the opening frame.

The host Chiefs came back late in the first period to take a 2-1 lead on goals by Turcott from Ryan Shaughness­y and Ethan Young and Robbins from Dane Young and Tyler Thompson.

The Knights tied it up in the second on a goal by Jack Nicholson from Justin Arnold and Shawn Walker.

Flynn then scored twice in the first half of the third period, short-handed on an assist by Matthew Wilbee at 6:19 and then at 9:24 from Zack Pearson and Jack Kauffeldt.

A power-play goal by Hawthorne from James Allen and Carson Hartwick at 10:35 made it 4-3, allowing Turcott to be able to tie the game.

North Kawartha outshot Lakefield. Ryan Baily had 23 saves on 27 shots for the win, while Brandon Soucy blocked 34 of 39 shots for the Chiefs.

The win maintains North Kawartha’s strangleho­ld on first place in the East Orr Division at 9-1-0-0, three points ahead of the Clarington Eagles (7-1-0-1), who hold a game in hand.

Lakefield (3-6-0-1) moved within one point of the thirdplace Port Perry Mojacks.

The Chiefs face the Mojacks at 2:25 p.m. Sunday at the Scugog Arena. The Knights host the Georgina Ice (1-8-0-0) on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Apsley.
