St. Peter student runs 100 kilometres raising funds for Terry Fox cause
St. Peter Secondary School student Nathan Twohey ran 100 kilometres for the Terry Fox campaign this year.
Although you’d usually find Nathan on skates playing hockey, he laced up his sneakers instead and hit the pavement to garner money for the campaign.
The Grade 11 student has raised cash for the fundraiser in the past, but this time the cause hit closer to home.
“A friend of mine got cancer this year, so it’s a little more sentimental, I guess,” he said.
His friend, Christian Levec, is who the St. Peter community is raising funds in honour of for the 2019 Terry Fox campaign.
Students from St. Peter and Holy Cross secondary schools teamed up Thursday to walk or run for the fundraiser.
Area high schools used to join together for a group walk/run at Nicholls Oval Park, but that ended two years ago. Since then, schools have organized their own events. About 1,000 students participated Thursday and many were dressed in their
school’s garb, including jerseys and hoodies, bearing Saints or Hurricanes logos. Nathan wore a unique Terry Fox T-shirt.
The 16-year-old spread out his 100-km trek over 15 days, running nearly seven kilometres around his neighbourhood each day.
“It was tough,” he said.
With his friend in mind, Nathan pushed through it and has raised $1,020 so far.
He has until Tuesday to add to his pot and he hopes to raise more.
“Cancer affects everybody, and if we can help prevent it, that’d be great.”
His mom, Kathy Twohey, who teaches math at St. Peter, said she was proud of her son.
“I’m proud of his determination. He went out and ran or shine and with purpose,” she said.
Nathan’s friend Laura Smith said she was eager to hear from Nathan each day, sharing how far he’d run and how much he’d raised.
“It’s amazing … it’s a super proud moment,” Laura said of Nathan’s efforts.
Laura, 17, is also raising money for the campaign and said being part of a school that’s recognized for its dedication to the foundation is always special.
“It’s a really awesome experience sharing the excitement with everyone,” Laura said.
