Peterborough Petes are still looking for their first win without Hunter Jones in net.

The Western Conference’s last-place Sarnia Sting upset the Eastern Conference’s first place Petes 4-2 before 3,070 fans at the Memorial Centre Thursday night.

The Petes outshot Sarnia 4325 but three power-play goals propelled the Sting who are 4-1 in their last five games after starting the season 0-6. The Petes are 1-1 at home compared to 8-3 on the road.

The Petes are 9-1 in games started by Jones and 0-3 when sophomore Tye Austin has started.

The Petes put Austin, trying to rebound after two rough starts to the season, under early pressure with a delay-of-game penalty 19 seconds into the game.

Justin Nolet put Anthony Tabak’s cross-ice pass by Austin 1:40 later on the power play.

The Petes got running around in their end leading to a second goal 2:38 later when Sean Josling converted Jamieson Rees’ pass silencing the crowd.

Mason McTavish’s goalmouth pass set up Cameron Butler with an open side of net but his backhand rolled wide midway through the first.

Sarnia’s second power play led to a 3-0 lead. Nolet had a lane open up and he fired a shot that Austin got a piece of but as it laid behind him Brayden Guy shovelled it across the goal-line.

The Petes got one back on their first power play when Gallant rifled Declan Chisholm’s pass over Ethan Langevin’s shoulder at 17:46.

Gallant was hauled down on a partial breakaway with a little more than a minute left and was awarded a penalty shot. He tried to go five-hole but Langevin blocked it with his stick.

A third power play and a third goal on the man-advantage restored Sarnia’s three-goal margin 10:17 into the second. Overage forward Ryan McGregor picked up his second goal in two games since returning from injury as he gained speed to get by his check and swoop in and slip the puck between Austin’s pads.

At the other end Langevin stymied McTavish off a one-timer with five minutes left in the second.

Moments after their first successful penalty kill early in the third David Maier drilled a shot off the post.

Two shifts later Nick Robertson blew down the wing and hammered a slapshot through Langevin’s legs at 6:52 to cut Sarnia’s lead in half. Two shifts later Langevin looked down

and out and he reached up to rob Brady Hinz.

The Petes will host their first back-o-back home games of the season when the Mississauga Steelheads visit the PMC on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. NOTES: Peterborough native
