James Strath Public School and Adam Scott Intermediate shared bragging rights on the flag rugby pitch on Thursday.

The Colts beat the Lions 9-5 in the girls final while the Lions edged the Colts 10-9 in the boys final at the Kawartha Pine Ridge Elementary Athletic Association North Intermediate Championships at Beavermead Park.

The Strath girls went 5-0 with 10 girls off the KPREAA boardwide championship team that was undefeated last year. Eden Hazeldine and Susy Workman had multiple tries in the final.

“We worked really well as a team and got our business trip done,” said player Kate Owen. “We have big goals to try to win KPREAA again.”

“We have a lot of experience and veteran leadership,” said Strath coach Brad Oakley.

“We had a couple of really tight games which I liked because last year we didn’t have that going into KPREAA. They had to be resilient and work as a team.”

The Lions only losses came against Strath.

“We knew James Strath was going to be very strong,” said Lions girls coach Mike Colling.

“They didn’t lose a game last year and pretty well had the exact same team back. We had a nice split of Grade 7 and 8 girls and they stepped up really well today. We were trying to stay in that last game and it got away from us a bit. The previous game we played them pretty close so the girls knew we had a chance.”

Dennis Roberts scored the overtime winning try in the boys final as Adam Scott went 6-0.

“Rugby is alive and well at Adam Scott,” said Lions boys coach Jeff Allen.

“To see the kids find success in a flag environment really helps to promote that sport transitioning into high school. We are looking forward to KPREAA. That’s how you script gold medal games. We were tied up and went to overtime. We lost the coin toss all day and even in overtime. We had a big defensive stop which forced our final play and we punched one in.”

Chemong Public School beat Westmount 7-4 to win the girls bronze medal and clinch the third spot in the KPREAA board-wide championship Wednesday at the Fleming Sports Complex. Westmount beat Chemong in the boys bronze medal game.

In Wednesday’s junior tournament, Westmount beat Strath by two tries in the girls final with North Cavan placing third.

The Strath boys edged Chemong by one try with Edmison Heights third.

The KPREAA junior tournament is Tuesday at Fleming.
