TASSS Sr. Griffins clinch 1st in football

The Thomas A. Stewart Griffins clinched first place in the Kawartha high school senior football league with a 9-8 win over previously unbeaten Holy Cross Hurricanes on Thursday. The Griffins complete their regular season schedule with a 6-0 record while Holy Cross (4-1) is second with one more game remaining. The Adam Scott Lions (3-2) and Crestwood Mustangs (3-2) are tied for third followed by the Fenelon Falls Falcons (2-3), St. Peter Saints (0-5) and Haliburton Highlands Redhawks (0-5). Fenelon Falls edged St. Peter’s 21-17 on Thursday. The regular season concludes with Crestwood hosting Holy Cross on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. and on Friday Adam Scott visits Fenelon Falls at 3 p.m. and St. Peter is at Haliburton at 3 p.m. Semifinals will be held Nov. 5 with the final on Nov. 9. Matchups are to be determined. The junior picture is much less certain after the Griffins edged the Hurricanes 3534 creating a potential logjam at the top of the standings. TASSS is tied with St. Peter’s for first place at 4-1 with Holy Cross at 3-1. The Saints beat Fenelon Falls 26-6 on Thursday. Crestwood and Fenelon Falls are tied for fourth at 1-3 and Adam Scott is in last place at 0-4. Crestwood will host Holy Cross Thursday at 1 p.m. while Adam Scott visits Fenelon Falls Friday at 1 p.m. Junior semifinals are also Nov. 5 with the final on Nov. 9.

Field Hockey

Bancroft’s North Hastings edged the St. Peter Saints 1-0 in the COSSA girls field hockey championsh­ip Tuesday at the Fleming Sports Complex. The Saints advanced to the final with a 1-0 win over Kawartha champion Haliburton Highlands Redhawks. North Hastings beat the Crestwood Mustangs 3-1 in the other semifinal.

Boys Soccer

Cobourg schools swept the Kawartha senior boys soccer titles on Thursday. The Cobourg Collegiate Wolves beat the Thomas A. Stewart Griffins in the AAA final in Cobourg. CCI will host the COSSA championsh­ips on Thursday. The St. Mary Thunder won the Kawartha AA title on Thursday beating the Crestwood Mustangs 5-1 in the final in Cobourg.
