Camp Kawartha offers a piece of local history
Vintage 1961 Lakefield Auto Topper boat is top fundraising auction prize
Camp Kawartha is hosting a top-notch fundraising auction that might just float your boat! The camp is auctioning off a mint condition 1961 Lakefield Auto Topper boat complete with its 1957 Johnson 7.5 motor.
“Prior Smith donated the boat and motor to the camp, and we are grateful for his generosity,” said Jacob Rodenburg, the camp’s executive director. “He wanted the proceeds from the sale of the boat to be invested in Camp Kawartha’s award-winning programming. It was auctioned off at our annual fundraiser and the kind-hearted winner donated it back. We are overjoyed that this is a gift that keeps on giving!”
This 11-foot-eight-inch cedarstrip fishing boat is historically important as it was the last boat sold at Lakefield Boats Limited before the factory closed in 1961. This type of auto-topper boat was produced in Peterborougharea factories for decades. These boats were very light and designed to be transported on car roof racks.
This auto topper comes with the original bill of sale and the original decals. The motor is in mint condition and comes with a spare cowling that can be used should the first one ever be scuffed or damaged. This set has been valued at $5,000.
Anyone wishing to participate and make a bid on this piece of local history can do so by visiting campkawartha.ca/auction. Follow the prompts and submit your bid. Starting reserve bid was $2,500; the present bid sits at $2,801. Bidding closes Dec. 10.

“This year’s event proceeds will once again go towards funding a Family Education Support Worker as part of CMHA HKPR’s Assertive Outreach for Suicide Prevention (AOSP) program. Since 2016, more than $70,000 has been raised from this event to support the funding of a Family Education Support Worker. Through the AOSP program, over 100 vulnerable individuals, each who have made a serious suicide attempt, have been supported,” states a release for the event.
YES Shelter for Youth and Families received $2,106.36 (10 per cent) of the proceeds.
CMHA HKPR thanks all participants and donors, organizer Dave Dame, sponsors Merrett Home Hardware, Lett Architects, and Medical Centre Pharmacy, as well as Runner’s Life for hosting the event.
