Monsef to marry former Liberal MP
‘We are feeling mighty blessed,’ she says of engagement
Peterborough-Kawartha MP Maryam Monsef has announced her engagement to a defeated Liberal MP from Fredericton, N.B.
“I am happy to share that I am engaged to marry my love, Matt DeCourcey,” Monsef wrote on her Facebook page on Thursday night.
“His family and friends in Fredericton came to PeterboroughKawartha and asked me and my family for my hand. My family and our elders loved him and his. They have blessed the union and we are feeling mighty blessed. Exhausted, but blessed,” she wrote.
Monsef made the announcement on Thursday, her 35th birthday. DeCourcey is 36.
He was the Liberal MP for Fredericton and was elected at the same time as Monsef, in 2015.
Although he ran for re-election Oct. 21, he lost his seat to the Green party’s Jenica Atwin. DeCourcey was a member of the House of Commons Special
Committee on Electoral Reform, a select group of MPs who studied options for electoral reform after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised the 2015 election would be the last using the first-past-thepost system.
Monsef was democratic institutions minister at the time and she also criss-crossed the country in 2016 consulting Canadians about electoral reform.
Monsef couldn’t be reached for comment immediately Thursday night. She didn’t write on Facebook when she would be married, or whether DeCourcey will move to Peterborough.
But the two were at a Liberal caucus meeting on Parliament Hill on Thursday, and although they mentioned their engagement to Ottawa reporters, CTV reported the couple said there’s no wedding date yet.
“We’re very happy,” Monsef said on her way out, CTV reported.
In photos on her Facebook page, Monsef wore an Afghan dress for her engagement party; she thanks Fardin Fashion Inc. of Toronto for delivering the dress “just in the nick of time.”
As a child, Monsef fled Taliban-ruled Afghanistan with her mother and two sisters and came to live in Peterborough. She is the first person born in Afghanistan to become an MP in Canada and the first Muslim to serve in the federal cabinet. She is also the first woman elected as MP in Peterborough.
Prior to the election she was both the women and gender equality minister and international development minister.
