Son who stabbed mother pleads guilty
21-year-old out on bail, will be sentenced in new year
Zachery Greensides will be sentenced in the new year for stabbing his mother. Greensides, who was charged with attempted murder, pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm on Thursday at the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough.
The stabbing, which took place on Dec. 1, 2018 on Dublin Street, was subject to a Special Investigations Unit (SIU) probe.
According to the SIU’s findings, Greensides’ mother called 911 shortly before 2 a.m. on Dec. 1, 2018 and reported her son had stabbed her with a knife.
City police arrived at the scene to find Greensides armed with a knife. The SIU reports that Greensides ignored officers’ demands to drop the knife and advanced toward an officer. According to the SIU, the officer kicked Greensides in the stomach.
Greensides then stabbed himself twice in the neck, before another officer peppersprayed him.
Both Greensides and his mother were taken to hospital for their injuries.
The SIU determined there were no grounds to lay criminal charges against any Peterborough police officer in relation to Greensides’ injuries.
The 21-year-old remains out on bail and is to return to court on Jan. 9 for sentencing submissions.
