High school, OUA star in big game against his hometown team
CALGARY — Halfway across the country, he’s in football’s Big Week with his hometown team. Well mostly against his hometown team.
Daniel Petermann, the 24-year-old graduate of Cardinal Newman Cardinals and McMaster Marauders, is a wide receiver with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Stoney Creek native is in his second CFL season after the Bombers selected him 26th overall in the 2018 CFL draft.
“It’ll be fun,” Petermann says. “If I do get to play and beat my hometown team, that’d be cool.”
Petermann is the third-ranked in an excellent corps of Blue Bomber Canadian receivers behind Nick Demski and Drew Wolitarsky. Because of the way Winnipeg configures its roster, he may not be in uniform for Sunday’s game unless another player suffers an injury.
In limited action this year, he made 15 catches for 118 yards and a touchdown. Bombers offensive co-ordinator Paul LaPolice says that when he does get a chance to play Petermann performs well.
When the Bombers, who were 5-0 at the time, and the 4-1 Ticats met at Tim Hortons Field in late July, it was only the sixth time in 61 years that two teams who’d played at least five games each, had met with just one loss between them. Hamilton took an early 14-0 lead and won 23-15, but Petermann had three catches, after making five the week before against Ottawa and drawing praise from the TSN commentators.
He’s requested only six tickets for Sunday’s game.
