Ac­tiv­ity Haven draw sends win­ner to Puerto Plata

Top prize is a trip for two to Do­mini­can Repub­lic re­sort

And we have a win­ner! Con­grat­u­la­tions to Paulette Nichols, the lucky win­ner of Ac­tiv­ity Haven’s draw for an all-ex­pense-paid trip for two to a spa re­sort in Puerto Plata, Do­mini­can Repub­lic.

The win­ning en­try was drawn at a re­cent bingo night by Teresa Kaszuba of Global Peter­bor­ough’s The Morn­ing Show.

Book Launch

The of­fi­cial launch for Ac­tiv­ity Haven’s new book, Tell Me A Story, a com­pi­la­tion of sto­ries by mem­bers, takes place Wed­nes­day at 11:45 a.m.

“I have heard so many amaz­ing, in­ter­est­ing, com­i­cal, and sad sto­ries from our mem­bers over time that I de­cided it was time to memo­ri­al­ize some of them,” said Thom Whitby, mar­ket­ing and special events co-or­di­na­tor for Ac­tiv­ity Haven.

Copies of the book will be avail­able for pur­chase, and many of the con­tribut­ing writ­ers will be in at­ten­dance.

“This is a first for Ac­tiv­ity Haven, and we are very ex­cited to share our sto­ries with the world,” said Whitby.

As­tron­omy Christ­mas So­cial

The Peter­bor­ough As­tro­nom­i­cal As­so­ci­a­tion meets Fri­day at 7 p.m. for their monthly meet­ing and Christ­mas So­cial at the Ro­tary Ed­u­ca­tion Cen­tre guest ser­vices build­ing, Riverview Park and Zoo.

The PAA of­fers 45-minute novice as­tron­omy classes at 6 p.m. prior to the main meet­ing, that in­tro­duce as­tron­omy re­lated sub­jects at a very ba­sic level. This month’s ses­sion, The Moon, looks at the birth of the moon in the “Big Splat,” his­tor­i­cal and cur­rent ex­plo­ration by coun­ties around the world, and what the fu­ture holds for con­tin­ued ex­plo­ration and habi­ta­tion.

The main pre­sen­ta­tion at 7 p.m. fea­tures PAA mem­ber James Lee, speak­ing on Deep Sky Pho­tog­ra­phy.

Fol­low­ing the main pre­sen­ta­tion, The Sky This Month dis­cus­sion looks at the lo­ca­tions of the plan­ets and what is hap­pen­ing in the sky for the up­com­ing month.

The Christ­mas So­cial be­gins at 8 p.m. Please bring a fes­tive treat or two and share.

Com­mu­nity mem­bers are in­vited to at­tend this all-ages event and see what the PAA has to of­fer. There is no cost and the venue is bar­rier-free.

Giv­ing Tues­day

Giv­ing Tues­day is his­tor­i­cally held ev­ery Dec. 3. The Peter­bor­ough Field Nat­u­ral­ists (PFN) ask that you con­sider them when think­ing about your Giv­ing Tues­day gift.

PFN is a reg­is­tered char­ity with the Cana­dian Rev­enue Agency. A do­na­tion can be made ei­ther to the Peter­bor­ough Field Nat­u­ral­ists or the PFN Legacy Fund, an en­dow­ment fund man­aged by the Com­mu­nity Foun­da­tion of Greater Peter­bor­ough and, in ac­cor­dance with CRA reg­u­la­tions, pro­vides an an­nual in­come to the PFN. This in­come is used for special ini­tia­tives such as the re­cently an­nounced grant pro­gram, cit­i­zen­science projects and youth ini­tia­tives.
