Don’t use tax dollars to support development

The Peterborough Examiner - - OPINION -

No, no no! Do NOT, repeat, NOT let city council use our money to pay private developers for the construction of luxury housing in downtown Peterborough. The desecration of the old YMCA building has gone far beyond redemption in terms of historic preservation. Retaining some semblance of a building façade does not in any sense qualify as preservation and the company which has let this mess on one of our major downtown corners continue for years has been woefully ignorant of factors they should have been well aware of regarding this shameful project years ago. Despite the tent city of last summer and the crying need for affordable housing that screams at us, the idea that public money from any level should be accessed to assist a builder is outrageous. This city has an embarrassing record of demolishing solid, important structures without good reason. Do not approve any more projects that require destroying something that could merely be renovated for the good of all. Condominiums or luxury rentals are neither needed nor desirable in our downtown and simply exacerbate the strain on our landfill.
