Minor Peewee AA Petes help Canada beat U.S.
The Peterborough Trent Lakes Plumbing Minor Peewee AA Petes helped Canada defeat the United States in the Nations Cup Tournament Gold division in Detroit on the weekend.
The Petes posted two wins, two losses and one tie to contribute five points to the Canadian totals.
The Petes opened up Friday morning with a 4-1 win over the USA’s Kensington Valley. Blake Moncrief scored the first goal assisted by Jack Gauvreau. The Petes scored three unanswered goals to end the game from Braedan Saxby, Travis Heffernan and Kaleb Jamieson with assists to Aedan Temple, Moncrief and Tristan Boucher with two. Antonio Bianco picked up the win in net.
The Petes edged the hometown Detroit Jimmie Johns 2-1 on Friday. Peterborough built a 2-0 lead with Heffernan set up by Cameron Reynolds and Katie Belk and Moncrief scored in the second period on a pass from Bouchard. After the USA scored one, Nathan Sorichetti stood tall shutting the door and securing the victory. On Saturday morning the Petes faced their toughest competition from the Chicago Blues, one of the top ranked teams in the USA. Chicago won 3-1. Gauvreau tied it 1-1 in the second on a feed from Saxby and Caiden Rogers. Bianco played great facing a number of shots and rushes throughout.
In the Saturday evening game the Petes tied the Canton Rebels 3-3 in the final round-robin match. Moncrief, Gauvreau and Temple scored with assists going to Jamieson, Rogers and Moncrief. Sorichetti was key in goal stopping a breakaway late in the game to keep it tied.
The Canadian side was well ahead after the round-robin in points and went into Championship Sunday on a high note. After teams were all ranked and matches set, the Peterborough team faced off versus the Northwest Chargers who edged Peterborough 3-2.
Both teams led in the back and forth affair. Scoring for Peterborough was Braeden Couture and Jack Davies on assists to Jack Burns, Colby Kekki, Ben Gusso and Belk.
A team from Milton defeated Detroit’s Compuware in a shootout in the final game of the tournament to secure Canada’s tournament win and the Nations Cup.
The Petes are coached by Mike Heffernan, Todd Rogers, Wayne Davies, Patrick Ralph and Chris Moncrief.
