New OHL arena will end up costing taxpayers millions

Re: City considering downtown site for Memo

rial Centre replacement, Nov. 6

On Nov. 6, The Examiner carried an article concerning the location of a proposed new sport and entertainment centre to replace the Peterborough Memorial Centre. The article stated that council will consider a consultant’s recommendation to locate it on property currently occupied by the city’s public works yard on Townsend Street plus the Market Plaza, Smitty’s Restaurant Plaza and the Tim Hortons on George Street.

The consultant’s report states that the proposed site would be a better location because it would help boost “downtown vibrancy.”

I am not sure what that means, but I do know that to acquire the suggested site would cost many millions of dollars and, that even if the city receives millions in government funding, in the long run it is we the taxpayers who are paying.

When Morrow Park is available for the location for the centre at no cost to the city, it seems to me this should be an easy decision to make and I am sure that there would not be too big a loss to “downtown vibrancy.”

With respect to the council looking at ways to cut costs in its 2021 budget by ceasing to operate the Little Lake fountain at a savings of $109,000, I believe that Glenn Stuart’s letter to the Examiner on Nov. 5 is excellent and expresses the feelings of a great many of us who live here.
