Variant cases continue to spread after Severn Court outbreak

Peterborou­gh reached the 700 mark in cumulative COVID-19 cases after nine new cases were reported Friday afternoon by Peterborou­gh Public Health as the area continues to feel the effects of its largest outbreak yet at the Severn Court student residence.

A new outbreak was also declared Friday at the Regency Manor retirement home in Peterborou­gh.

The number of presumed variant cases jumped to 51, up from 43 on Thursday, on top of one earlier confirmed variant case, while active cases rose to 82, up from 76 on Thursday.

The jurisdicti­on of Peterborou­gh city and county, Curve Lake First Nation and Hiawatha First Nation has now had 700 cumulative cases with 609 resolved cases and nine earlier deaths.

The number of people being monitored by the health unit because of close contact with confirmed cases grew to 258 on Friday, up from 252 on Thursday.

Peterborou­gh Regional Health Centre reported having between one and four patients with COVID-19 on Friday, along with 17 critical care patients transferre­d from Greater Toronto Area hospitals that had reached their capacity.

There are also outbreaks at the Champlain College student residence at Trent University in Peterborou­gh and at the Empress Gardens retirement home on Charlotte Street in Peterborou­gh.

More than 44,000 residents, or 29.7 per cent, have now been tested at least once for the virus.

Three new cases in Northumber­land County

Three new COVID-19 cases in Northumber­land County were reported Friday afternoon by the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit.

There have now been 1,042 cumulative cases in the jurisdicti­on with 26 of them active, including three hospitaliz­ed cases with one in intensive care.

The City of Kawartha Lakes has had 544 cases with 13 active, Northumber­land County has had 447 cases with 13 active and Haliburton County has had 51 cases with all of them resolved.

The health unit is also monitoring 50 people in Northumber­land County, 38 in the City of Kawartha Lakes and three in Haliburton County who are considered to be at high risk due to close contact with a confirmed case, along with two high-risk contacts.

There were no new deaths Friday, variant cases held steady at 12 in Northumber­land County and two in the City of Kawartha Lakes and the only outbreak continues to be at Regency long-term-care home in Port Hope.

The jurisdicti­on, which has been in the orange restrict zone, is moving to the yellow protect zone on Monday. The health unit’s rate of cases has fallen to 9.5 cases per 100,000 people for the past seven days.
