Even though the Canadian Canoe Museum remains closed during the current provincial shutdown, there are many programs being offered virtually.

The museum’s first “beyond virtual” Paddles and Paints workshop takes place on Zoom on Saturday, May 8 at 10 a.m., to provide local families with the opportunity to virtually visit the museum with a live minitour, while instructors guide them through painting their own mini paddle at home.

“Everyone is welcome to join our dynamic instructors for this hands-on, family-friendly paddle painting workshop for the Peterborough community,” says Rachelia Giardino, marketing and social media specialist. “It’s fun for the whole family, whether you’re six or 66! We’ll take you live through the galleries for a whirlwind tour of the most fascinating and inspiring paddles in the collection, and then sit down together to demonstrate the techniques and possibilities for painting your paddle while you follow along (adapted for various age and skill levels), and we answer your questions.”

Registration for the Paddles and Paints workshop is $20, and participants will need to do curbside pickup for their paddle-painting kit from the museum at 910 Monaghan Rd., beforehand. For more information or to register visit canoemuseum.ca/event/ paddles-paints/

The museum’s virtual tours for seniors living in long-term care, retirement residences, or living independently are continuing until the end of June. To date, 175 local seniors have participated in the tours.

The live virtual tours connect local seniors with a museum guide as they explore exhibits and artifacts, providing an opportunity to interact with staff and each other.

Please contact karen.taylor@canoemuseum.ca or call 705-748-9153 x203 if you would like more information, or to arrange a virtual tour for your residence or long-term-care facility.

“Normally, our gallery would be abuzz with children throughout the spring, visiting us from near and far for their end-of-year field trips,” continues Giardino. “While that’s not possible this year, we’ve enjoyed connecting with local teachers and schools — as well as classrooms right across the province and country — to deliver our engaging virtual field trips in our galleries.”

There are new items in the gift store this spring.

“We have brought in new Oscardo products such as mugs and water bottles featuring beautiful Indigenous designs, books including ‘Feast by Firelight,’ which we think will be a new favourite for camping recipes, stunning Olive Cedar Studio jewelry, plenty of maps for planning new adventures, and our restoration quality canoe company decals,” she says.

They have brought back curbside pickup so customers can save on shipping. Online orders can be picked up at the museum on Thursday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon. Select local pickup at canoemuseumstore.ca and they will bring your order to you when you arrive.
