Ride Don’t Hide cycling benefit to happen virtually

- Caroline McConnell Northcrest_column@yahoo.ca

The Canadian Mental Health Association Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (CMHA HKPR) has partnered with Tom’s Heating and Cooling to present the fifth annual Ride Don’t Hide for Mental Health, that will happen virtually. Now is the time to start thinking about your goals and how you would like to participate, and perhaps gather together a team for the event that takes place throughout the month of June.

Proceeds will fund mentalhealth crisis programming to support some of our community’s most vulnerable individuals and help them on their path to recovery.

The theme of this year’s Ride Don’t Hide event is “move more, give back, feel better.”

Participants are encouraged to get outside and ride, walk, run or do yoga or swim, whatever activity supports their mental health. Individuals can register for free and create their own Ride Don’t Hide team. When registering, participants can set their own fundraising goals as well as set their activity type and track their progress. There will also be a mobile app available soon for participants to track their progress.

CMHA HKPR thanks their presenting sponsor Tom’s Heating and Cooling; diamond sponsors, Corus Entertainment’s the Wolf 101.5, Global News Peterborough, and 100.5 Fresh Radio; and Silver Sponsor AON Inc.

Field naturalists’ community project grants

Applications are now open for the Peterborough Field Naturalist (PFN) Community Project Grants. This year the PFN is able to offer a limited number of grants up to $200.

The Peterborough Field Naturalist Community Projects Grant initiative was created to support PFN members or community partners in enhancing the naturalist community or natural environment in Peterborough and the Kawarthas.

The objectives of the PFN Community Projects Grant align with the PFN motto: To know, appreciate and conserve nature in all its forms.

These grants are possible through the generous bequests and donations from PFN members which have been deposited in the PFN Legacy Fund that is managed by the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough.

Each grant application will be reviewed by the PFN selection committee. Supporting documents must be attached, such as letters of permission if your project is on private or public lands.

The Peterborough Field Naturalists (PFN) is a registered charity and active club that normally meets at 7:30 on the second Wednesday of the month from September to December and February to June at the Camp Kawartha Environment Centre, 2505 Pioneer Rd., as well as offering many field trips and outings. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, they are meeting on Zoom to discuss topics and hear guest speakers. For further information and/or to become a member, visit peterboroughnature.org.

Full details on the grant program and application form are available on the PFN website at peterboroughnature.org/pfnnature-grants.

Food and litter needed

Lakefield Animal Welfare Society is looking for donations as they are running low on wet cat food and clumping cat litter.

If you can help them out with a donation of either of these items, bring it to the shelter during regular hours and knock on the front door, or if after hours, leave it in the donation bin by the front door.
