COVID case count climbs by a dozen

There are 102 people battling it in this area; nearly 46,000 fully vaccinated

The Peterborou­gh area recorded 12 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday.

The city and county, Hiawatha First Nation and Curve Lake First Nation — the areas covered by Peterborou­gh Public Health reports that the area — have 102 active cases.

There have been 1,146 cases confirmed since March 2020, with 1,031 resolved. Of those, 379 have involved a variant of the virus. Thirteen people have died.

As of Thursday, 43,602 people have received a first dose of a vaccine and 2,481 have received a second. In all, 45,917 doses have been administer­ed.

Five local outbreaks are ongoing at Empress Gardens, Champlain College’s student residence E/F tower at Trent University, one unnamed congregate living facility and two unnamed workplaces.

Testing

About 49,000 people, roughly 31.1 per cent of the population of the area, have been tested at least once since March 2020.

COVID-19 testing continues at Peterborou­gh Regional Health Centre and at Northcrest Arena, both by appointmen­t only. To book a spot, visit prhc.on.ca or peterborou­ghpubliche­alth.ca.

Testing by Peterborou­gh Public Health staff can also be arranged in the home by calling 705-743-1000.

This is specifical­ly for people who meet certain criteria: Asymptomat­ic students, teachers and staff in schools and child-care settings; residents, visitors or workers in longterm-care homes; residents or workers in homeless shelters; internatio­nal students who have passed their 14-day quarantine period; farm workers; self-identified Indigenous people.

Neighbouri­ng areas

There were 220 new cases reported in Durham Region, with 2,406 cases active in the area. The region has seen 12 deaths in the past week, with 334 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit reported five new cases in Northumber­land, bringing the county’s total number of confirmed cases to date to 771.

There were a few new cases in the neighbouri­ng HKPR areas. The City of Kawartha Lakes had seven new cases, bringing its total case count to date to 682, with 31 unresolved cases.

Haliburton had one new case , pushing its total case count to date to 92. Nine cases were unresolved. The variant of concern count there was 14 to date.
