The Peterborough Chapter of the Ontario Archaeological Society presents a Zoom presentation by Robyn Lacy Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Lacy’s presentation is called “Here lyes the body of: Settler Burial Grounds in northeast North America.” Members of the public are invited to participate.

“I will explore how European settlers have been a constant of the North American landscape for over 400 years and how their development of burial grounds tells the story of how they lived and died, and created the burial landscapes we are familiar with today, from New England to Newfoundland,” said Lacy. “This talk will explore the development and impact of settler burial space from the 17th century to present day, their trends and layout in settlements, and what these spaces are like today.”

A historical archeologist and gravestone conservator, Lacy is currently working on her PhD in archeology at Memorial University of Newfoundland. In her research she explores the relationship between settler burial grounds and their communities in the 17th century.

Most recently, she has worked in cultural resource management in southwest Ontario as an archeologist and cultural heritage specialist. She is the author of the book, “Burial and Death in Colonial North America,” published in 2020. For further information on her research visit her website, spadeandthegrave.com.

Lacy’s presentation is one in a series of the Peterborough chapter’s virtual presentations on women in archeology.

To register in advance for this presentation, please contact Sheryl Smith, president of the Peterborough chapter, at sherylsmith222@gmail.com.
