GARVEY, Frederick John

Fred passed away on April 22, 2021 in his 97th year. He was surrounded by his wife of 72 years, Teresa (Crough) and his children Donna Simard (Jean), Fred Jr. (Chris), Carmel Bissonette (Leo), Elizabeth McLean (Brian) and Anne Marie McConkey (Bryon Sorg). Fred was a Veteran, Sportsman and served for four years in the Royal Canadian Navy aboard the mine sweeper HMCS Wasaga. As an athlete he was recognized for his accomplish­ments in 1992 and was inducted in the Peterborou­gh and District Sports Hall of Fame as an allaround athlete. Fred played for the Pete's and Legion Senior Hockey Clubs and Pete's Senior baseball teams in the late 40's and 50's. He was also an accomplish­ed football player playing quarterbac­k and running back for the Orfuns Football Team. He loved sports and organized many baseball clinics across Eastern Ontario. As a Musician, he played the fiddle and harmonica, playing in various fiddle groups. He played at many Retirement and Nursing Homes which brought him much joy playing for Seniors in our Community. Fred came from a generation of faith, great respect and love. He lived this every day and showed this in the way he respected his wife, children, grandchild­ren, and people he met and knew. The friendship­s he made on and off the fields, served him throughout his life. Fred leaves behind his wife Teresa, 5 children, 12 grandchild­ren and 13 great grandchild­ren. He is predecease­d by his parents Joe and Mary Helen (Winnie) (O'Brien), his brother Father Raymond Garvey and his sister Mae and her spouse Adrian Hurley and his children Danny, Dennis, Margaret, and Joseph. He was brother-in-law to Tim (Alice) Crough, Vince (Mary) Crough, Carmel (Gerry) LaFave, Urban (Helen) Crough, Helen (Joe Hoey), Peter (Denise) Crough, Fergus Crough, Jack (Marie) Crough, Michael (Max) Crough, Emmett (Shirley) Crough, Colette (John) Moher, Sister Eileen Crough, Gerry Crough, Robert Leo, Frances, and Mary Crough all predecease­d. He is survived by sister-in-laws Pat Lustic (Frank deceased), Doreen Arthurs, Shirley (Al) O'Neill and Anne Crough (wife of Gerry). Fred was an uncle to numerous nieces and nephews and a friend to many. Special Thanks to the Staff, Nurses and PSW's at Rubidge Retirement Home for all their thoughfuln­ess and care. A Celebratio­n of Life will be held when life is good again. In memory of Fred, donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, The Alzheimer Society or the charity of your choice would be appreciate­d by the family.
