Johnston brothers reel in second- fourth-place finishes in Elite standings

- WADDINGTON, N.Y. —

Peterborou­gh area brothers Chris and Cory Johnston secured top-five finishes in the Bassmaster Elite Angler of the Year standings with top-five results at the weekend’s season finale.

Chris Johnston, of Peterborou­gh, matched Cory’s 2019 feat by finishing second in the AOY standings with 726 points, behind Seth Felder’s 787. Johnston placed fifth with a four-day weight of 85 pounds at the Farmers Insurance Bassmaster Elite on the St. Lawrence River. Last year, he won the event becoming the first Canadian to win a Bassmaster Elite Series derby. He had five top-10 results and a 12th-place finish among 2021’s 10 events earning $168,000.

Cory Johnston, of Cavan, led the final event after three days before slipping to fourth with a total of 88 pounds to finish fourth overall in the AOY standings with 668 points. He had two top-10 results and six top-20 finishes in 10 events with an earnings of $138,500. Japan’s Taku Ito’s eye-popping 26-pound final day haul propelled him to victory at the final event with a four-day total of 90 pounds.
