Christ Lutheran Church welcoming new pastor

Christ Lutheran Church, 463 Highland Rd., is holding a rummage/ bake/plant sale Saturday from 7 a.m. until noon. There will be furniture, household items, homemade baking, tomato plants and perennial bedding plants, but no clothing or shoes. Organizers promise fair pricing.

New pastor

The Christ Lutheran Church congregati­on eagerly anticipate­s the arrival of a new pastor. Pastor Franklin Morales comes to the church from Washington D.C. via Rome, Central America and Venezuela. The immigratio­n process has started for the pastor, his wife, Dr. Yenny, a cardiologi­st, and their fiveyear-old daughter. It is hoped that he will be in Peterborou­gh by the end of August.

Mother’s Day tea

Activity Haven is hosting a Mother’s Day tea Friday at 2:30 p.m. Enjoy a cup of tea, treats and entertainm­ent by a harpist. The cost for members is $8, and $10 for non members. Register by calling 705876-1670.

Be prepared

Activity Haven is hosting a Be Prepared workshop, presented by AgeFriendl­y Peterborou­gh on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Participan­ts will receive a Be Prepared workbook that includes checklists, prompting questions and helpful resources. They will learn how to use it and discover and discuss preparatio­n strategies. There is no charge. To sign up, call the Activity Haven office at 705-876-1670.

Astronomy meeting

The Peterborou­gh Astronomic­al Associatio­n meets via Zoom Friday, beginning at 6 p.m., and community members are invited to tune in. The format includes a novice astronomy class, followed by the main presentati­on with a questionan­d-answer period.

The novice astronomy classes continue with Lesson 4, Our Solar System. Participan­ts will be introduced to our sun and eight planets, look at their size, distances and physical characteri­stics, learn about moons, dwarf planets, comets and asteroids, the origins of life and the possibilit­y that it may be lurking elsewhere in our solar system.

The novice astronomy class begins at 6 p.m. and runs for approximat­ely 45 minutes.

The main presentati­on, beginning after a short meeting at 7 p.m., is an “in house” array of astronomy topics, and an introducti­on of “Telescope Roundtable.” As part of the member’s night feature, member Walter Gebhardt, will talk about his telescope journey. Also, some interestin­g gadgets will be presented. There will also be an opportunit­y to have questions answered.

Nature outing

Peterborou­gh Field Naturalist­s have an outing planned for Sunday from 8 until 11 a.m. Join Scott McKinlay for a birding and nature hike along the 2.5-kilometre Hogsback Trail on the Omemee Esker, with stops on the way in the Cavan hills and swamps.
