The 30th anniversary season of Public Energy Performing Arts continues with “Vástádus eana” (The Answer Is Land) on March 3 at 2 p.m. at the Public Energy Performing Arts, 140 Charlotte St.

This internationally acclaimed dance concert hails from north of the Arctic Circle in Norway and was created by Indigenous Sámi choreographer Ell Sofe Sara. It features yoik, the unique music of the-Sámi people, seven dancers, and music by Frode Fjellheim, who also composed music to the movie “Frozen.”

“Love and connection to nature, our surroundings and people are important to me, as I live in a Sámi village and society” says Sara. “I had an urge to create a dance and yoik experience where connection to the place (the land, nature) and togetherness are the main themes. That’s the starting point of this project.”

Sara is a choreographer, director and filmmaker who holds an MA in choreography from the Oslo Academy of Arts and studied dance at the Laban Trinity School in London, UK. She is considered one of her generation’s most influential dance artists. Sara grew up in a family of reindeer herders in Guovdageaidnu, Norway and each year she takes part in the seasonal migration of reindeer and the marking of newborns with her children.

Please note this performance begins outdoors in the Peterborough Square Courtyard outside the theatre, where the dancers will perform briefly and then move with the audience into Market Hall via a wheelchair accessible route.

Tickets are on a pay-what-you-can sliding scale ranging from $10 to $50. For more information, or to purchase tickets, please visit publicenergy.ca or call 705-745-1788.
