Blizzardfest brings the arts community together
Wesley United Church accepting donations for Sept. 7 garage sale
Being part of the recent Blizzardfest at the Buckhorn Community Centre, I represented Kawartha Land Trust (KLT).
I talked to many people as they walked by about the latest KLT acquisition in the Municipality of Trent Lakes and various other aspects of KLT.
I also watched the volunteers across the aisle, Ellen Dumas, Serena Edmonds, Caitlyn Therrien and Emily Therrien, helping children paint birdhouses, work on colouring pages and other creations. Volunteers Janet and Pete Clarkson represented the Buckhorn District Lions Club. One of those Lions volunteers, Andy Hing, introduced visitors to the Buckhorn First Touch Soccer program, which he is organizing as a division of the Peterborough City Soccer Club. These volunteers are all passionate about serving their community.
Then there were volunteers outside overseeing public skating at the rink, marshmallow roasting, hockey puck shooting, snow bubbles, snowshoeing and a cast iron frying pan toss, as well as the obstacle course. Back inside, you could build and race a gravity car, take part in the chili-tasting contest or participate in carnival games. And then there were those who volunteered to work at the snack bar. It would be impossible to name all of the volunteers involved with all of these activities, but all are enthusiastic about serving their community and providing a reputable event.
The exhibitors also ardently presented their wares or services. Tetyana, of Tetyana’s Mart of Art, patiently explained the process of felting to those at her site. Lynn, of Lynn’s Recycled Hoods and Mitts, described to those visiting her table how she recreated mitts and hoods out of previously used knitted items such as sweaters. The Minden Fur Council was again present with its sample of pelts presented to those attending. Trent Lakes Fire Rescue explained its life-saving services to the public.
The list continues as to those with wares or services that were devotedly presenting their skills or product to those interested.
And what about the entertainers? There was Brent Wettlaufer, Andrew Vatcher of Ace & the Kidd, Matt the Science Guy, Anna Argante and Jasmine Murray, plus the announcement of the chili contest winners. Something for everyone.
It was a great day filled with people passionate about their community, their skills, their products or services.
Wesley United Church
And then there are the people at Wesley United Church, passionate about providing activities for their church family and any community members that would like to join the family. On Sunday, new members were accepted into their community. Their weekly schedule goes like this:
■ The Wesley Coffee group meets at the church at 9:30 a.m. Fridays;
■ Wesley Euchre party now the second Wednesday of the month starting at 6 p.m.;
■ Zoom Bible study on Thursdays at 7 p.m.;
■ The ukulele instructional group meets every other Friday at Wesley. Anyone interested in learning how to play the ukulele is welcome. The meetings are 1 to 3 p.m.
Other activities planned are a Ukrainian Easter Egg course on Saturday and a sit down and takeout pasta dinner April 6. More on that later.
