St. Peter’s girls win Kawartha AAA crown
Saints defeat Lindsay’s I.E. Weldon in the final. Both teams advance to COSSA next week
The St. Peter’s Saints girls hockey team just keeps marching on.
The Saints captured the Kawartha AAA high school championship with a 3-1 win over Lindsay’s I.E. Weldon Wildcats on Monday at the Kinsmen Civic Centre to improve to 10-0 against Kawartha competition this season. Both finalists will advance to COSSA next Monday in Peterborough. The COSSA champion will advance to OFSAA, where the Saints placed fourth last year, in Brooklin following the March break.
The Holy Cross Hurricanes captured the Kawartha AA title with a 3-1 win over Cobourg’s St. Mary’s Thunder also on Monday at the Kinsmen Civic Centre. Both teams will advance to COSSA in Belleville on Monday. It was the Hurricanes first time competing in the Kawartha league in a number of years.
The Saints haven’t lost a game in Kawartha league play since prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Wildcats have given them their toughest battles, handing them a tie in regular-season action last year and pushing them in Monday’s final as the Saints clinched the game with an empty-net goal. Scoring for the Saints were Avery Mann, Clara Williams and Riley Falkner.
“We’re fortunate enough to have a lot of depth,” said Saints coach Mike
Martone. “We had four lines playing and six defence and both goalies played (Monday). It’s always nice when you’re coaching and you feel comfortable putting anyone out on the ice to get the job done at any given time. We were lucky to get contributions from everyone today and that’s what you need especially in the playoffs.”
Martone said the Wildcats are always a tough opponent.
“I.E. Weldon plays us really
tough,” he said. “They’re well coached and they work extremely hard. They had a good goalie, too, and when you have a hard-working team and a good goalie it’s going to be a battle right to the end, which it’s been every time we’ve played them.”
In the semifinals, the Saints defeated the Cobourg Collegiate Wolves, 4-0. Scoring were Michela Gillespie, Lauren Guest, Avery Johnston and Brooke Jeffery.
The Wildcats advanced to the final by defeating the Thomas A. Stewart Griffins, 7-1. Scoring details were unavailable.
In the AA final, Abby Brumwell scored a pair of goals and Katie Belk also tallied to lead Holy Cross, while Anna Crowley replied for St. Mary.
In the AA semifinals, St. Mary defeated the Crestwood Mustangs, 3-1, while Holy Cross beat the Lindsay Collegiate Spartans, 5-2. Scoring details were unavailable.
