Kudos to Adam Scott
My wife and I attended a girls' basketball tournament at Adam Scott CVI in Peterborough on March 1 to watch our granddaughter play.
Here are some observations: We arrived at 8:45 a.m. to an active setting, arriving students and a busy parking area.
We were greeted in the parking area by the well-appointed and friendly face of a custodian. He welcomed us to the school and showed us the appropriate door and directed us to the gym. A positive first impression.
The school was neat and clean and appeared well-organized. Students were well-behaved and going about their business. At the gym there were nine teams from schools throughout the Peterborough area. The team sizes varied from six to 15 young ladies, all excited to play. The games were played in a large gym divided into two courts.
The tournament started on time!
The girls represented a broad diversity of cultures, all playing together, different races, different religions — all just having fun.
The players’ skill level improved throughout the day. Players could be identified into three groups.
There were players that had little idea of what was going on and played with hands and arms expanded, hoping to touch the ball. There was a large number of girls learning the game and a small group of girls that had basketball experience and skills.
Nobody seemed to care if they won or lost.
The teams were all wellcoached by coaches with different skills, similar to the players. Everyone was encouraged and supported in a positive manner.
At the end of the tournament there was no trophy or celebration ... only smiles.
Thank you to the organizers, the host school, the timekeepers, scorekeepers and referees.
We left the school with a feeling of confidence in the future and with confirmation of the importance of extracurricular events to the education of a well-rounded student.
We are often too quick to see shortcomings, I thought you should hear of a success.
