It’s not a doctor in the house, but Dunsford vet tech comes close

- CATHERINE WHITNALL REPORTER

Mikayla Moore is not a doctor, but she does make house calls.

“When I started working in emergency medicine, I had a lot of clients asking ‘Can you come home with me?’ ” said Moore, a registered veterinary technician and owner of Pawsitively Mobile RVT animal care services.

“I love this job — I never ever pictured myself doing anything else — so I thought, why not start my own business where I can spread out and help the community better?”

The idea tugged at Moore’s mind and heart many times during the six years she spent working in veterinary clinics, but the timing was never right. When she returned to her Dunsford hometown, she decided to put the plan into action.

Moore, who has experience with a wide range of pets, including birds and exotics, offers most veterinary services, including nail trims, wound management, voiding anal glands and subcutaneous fluid injections. She is also willing to transport samples for clients and assist with hospice and end-of-life care.

Although Moore cannot diagnose issues or prescribe medication, she can follow through with medications and diagnosis aftercare. For example, while she wouldn’t be able to diagnose a cat’s diabetes, she can help with such things as managing diet and glucose curves.

“Going to a client’s home is already going to save them the cost of travelling and exam fees. I want to run a successful business, but I want to help people … And I want to make it a little more stress-free for pets too,” said Moore, citing animals that do not travel well and/or become anxious in clinical settings.

“I’m kind of offering a bridge between the vet and them (the owner).”

The business will also benefit veterinary clinics.

“Some clinics are so busy with emergencies that some people are having to wait hours for a simple nail trim,” said Moore. “Taking these types of things off their hands, staff can focus on more urgent cases.”

While Moore is currently focusing on the Kawartha Lakes, she is open to expanding her service area, should there be sufficient demand. At present, her business hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday to Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

She is willing to make exceptions based on urgency.
