Birds of prey swoop down at Lansdowne Place Mall

- CLIFFORD SKARSTEDT

Children and family members attended the Eyrie’s Experience Birds of Prey show, which included interactive displays, during ongoing March break activities at Lansdowne Place Mall Wednesday.

The Eyrie is a birds of prey centre whose goal is to instil respect, a sense of wonder and knowledge of raptors.

While working toward its eventual goals of having a facility open to the public and a rehabilitation centre, it is currently focusing on educational outreach.

Run by husband and wife team Matthew and Kristin Morgan, the Eyrie employs a respect for the welfare of its animals as a top priority in all that it does. The organization is constantly learning and adapting to try to be the best caretakers possible.

Matthew achieved his lifelong dream of becoming a falconer nearly a decade ago. After learning the basics of how to train raptors while attending Trent University for environmental studies, he began his career in training and flying various birds of prey.

He has worked at Ireland’s premier falconry centre, and has travelled across Canada, from B.C. to Newfoundland, sharing his passion for birds of prey and teaching thousands about these incredible animals.

Kristin learned much about the theoretical aspect of training raptors while Matthew was starting his own training. She learned more of the hands-on aspect while travelling across Western Canada and simultaneously completing her own degree in Fanshawe College’s ecotourism program.

She has a passion for ensuring the public has a thorough and reliable field of knowledge to encourage others to go out into the natural world and experience it first-hand.
