Bike Build set for April 14 in Peterborough
Community two-wheeler experts will be donating their time to repair and check bicycles
B!KE: the Peterborough Community Bike Shop is hosting its annual Kid’s Bike Build on April 14 and is looking for donations of old and unused kids’ bicycles.
If you find any while cleaning out your garage or shed, you might consider donating them to the event.
Volunteers from B!KE and mechanics from other local bike shops will be donating their time to repair and check the two-wheelers.
They will then be provided freeof-charge to local organizations working with children and youth.
Previous events have seen up to 60 refurbished bikes donated to organizations including the New Canadians Centre, the Nogojiwanong Friendship Centre, Haliburton Children’s Aid, Kawartha Boys and Girls Club and the YES Shelter.
“Riding a bike can be such a fun and liberating activity for a child,” said B!KE executive director Mark Romeril.
“We want to do what we can to ensure that opportunity is available to all children in our community,” he added.
Donations of children’s bikes, up to 24-inch wheel size, will be accepted any time before April 12 and can be dropped off at B!KE, located at 293 George St. N, during business hours.
Ideally, donated bikes should have all major parts such as wheels and handlebars. For information, visit communitybikeshop.org or call 705-775-7227.
Peterborough Historical Society
This month’s meeting of the Peterborough Historical Society takes place Tuesday and features Dr. Allan Kirby, who will give a talk titled “Edith Folke: Collecting Traditional Folk Songs in Rural Ontario.” Kirby is a musician and music scholar, earning his PhD from Carleton University.
Early folk ballads from the old countries, emphasizing Ireland, were often adapted for their new surroundings.
These unique songs generated interest from musicologist Charles Louis Seeger Jr., a professor at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), who was also the father of American folksinger Pete Seeger.
From 1956 to 1964, audio recordings of many of these songs were made by noted Canadian folklorist Edith Folke at P.G. Towns’ General Store in Douro, and throughout Peterborough County.
This free public meeting takes place at 7:30 p.m. at the Lion’s Community Centre, 347 Burnham St. For information, visit phs-hutchisonhouse.ca or call 705-740-2600.
