Holy Cross girls playing for gold
The Holy Cross Hurricanes girls hockey team is playing for the OFSAA AA gold medal.
The Hurricanes defeated Georgian Bay, 6-2, in the semifinals Thursday morning to advance to the final against Kitchener-Waterloo’s St. David Thursday afternoon in Whitby. A score wasn’t available at deadline.
Annalise MacPhee and Katie Belk scored two goals each, while Molly Farace had a goal and assist and Abbi Brumwell two assists in the semifinals. Lily Merrick also scored.
In quarterfinal action on Wednesday afternoon, Holy Cross beat Holy Cross (SOSSA), 3-1. Farace scored twice, while MacPhee had a goal and assists and Belk two helpers. Holy Cross was 2-0-1 in pool play. They opened pool play on Tuesday with a 2-2 tie against Lorne Park. Olivia Cote had a goal and assist, while Farace also scored. The Hurricanes then hammered Burlington Central, 15-4. Cote scored four times, Farace three, Belk and Brumwell twice, while Macy Harper, Megan Bell, Grace Plunkett and Olivia Desautel also scored.
They closed out pool play with a 5-2 win over St. David. Farace had two goals and an assist, Brumwell a goal and two assists, Belk a goal and one helper and Claire Chambers also scored.
The St. Peter’s Saints reached the quarterfinals of the OFSAA AAA championship, also in Whitby, before falling, 4-0, to Medway.
They kicked off the tournament with a pair of wins on Tuesday beating Bishop PF Reding, 2-0, with goals by Makenzie Taylor and Lily Legault. They also defeated St. Charles College, 3-1, with goals by Taylor, Avery Johnston and Clara Williams.
On Day 2, the Saints lost, 4-0, to Centre Wellington to finish second in their pool. That set up the meeting with Medway who won Pool B.
The Saints players of the games were Ava D’Alessandro, Johnston, Chloe Fife and Legault.
Curling
The Adam Scott Lions boys and I.E. Weldon Wildcats girls were both 2-1 after three draws at the OFSAA curling championships in Kingston.
Adam Scott opened play on Wednesday with a 6-5 win over Tananbaum CHAT. They dropped their second game, 7-5, to Twin Lakes.
On Thursday morning, they defeated E.S. Pierre Savard, 15-1. They faced Hammarskjold on Thursday afternoon before completing pool play Friday morning against Tommy Douglas. Playoffs begin Friday afternoon.
On the girls side, the Wildcats dropped their opener, 11-2, to Uxbridge before rebounding to defeat Northern CVI, 11-4, and Stratford District, 6-5. They were to face Frontenac Thursday afternoon before completing pool play Friday morning against Cardinal Leger.
