Photo exhibit planned for Empress Gardens
Peterborough’s Cardona was inspired to pick up a camera at a young age by her grandmother
Local photographer Linda Cardona presents “Nature’s Glory,” a solo exhibit at Empress Gardens, located at 131 Charlotte St., throughout the month of April.
The exhibit is open for public viewing from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily and is part of Peterborough’s SPARK Photo Festival.
“For years I have specialized in flower photography. It is what I am known for,” explains Cordona. “Although I have enjoyed macro photography for years, it was time for a new twist.”
She has spent the last year learning new photography skills, including intentional camera movement and digital painting.
“It has opened new doors for my creativity,” she says, and invites others to “join me in my exhibit to see what I have learned.”
Cardona was “inspired at a young age by her grandmother who was passionate about photography.” She inherited her grandmother’s camera “and so learned photography on a manual film camera. It was a great initial exposure to understanding the technical side of photography,” she says. Although today, she prefers digital photography and enjoys capturing the beauty of nature in all four seasons.
A reception and meet-the-artist event will take place on Sunday, April 21, at Empress Gardens from 4 to 6 p.m. To learn more about Cardona and her work, visit @LindaCardonaPhotography on Facebook or Instagram.

Undies Sunday
After the success of last year’s event, with more than 500 pairs of underwear donated to YES Shelter, St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church is once again holding Undies Sunday next Sunday.
“Having clean, new underwear is such a basic human need,” says Sarah Cornett, the manager of YES Shelter. “I’m thankful to our local church community who continually step up to help the YES Shelter support young people and families through homelessness.”
Rev. Debora Rolls says her church will be a drop-off location for underwear donations and is “encouraging other churches and service clubs to join us in this drive.”
St. Paul’s Church is located at The Mount Community Centre at 1545
Monaghan Rd. and community members can drop off donations on Undies Sunday or at the church office on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. until next Monday.
Hutchison House
On Wednesday evenings throughout the month of April, Hutchison House will host “Pairings,” a series of evening events. Participants will enjoy tea and coffee in the Keeping Room at the museum, paired with sweets from a local bakery, and learn from local businesses about a variety of topics.
Black Honey Bakery will be sharing its treats Wednesday, April 3, and Rob Cahill, from Cahill Furs, will be discussing what to do with heirloom and vintage furs. Participants are invited to bring their old furs to the event.
Kawartha Buttertart Factory and Restwell Upholstery will be paired on the evening of April 10. Participants can enjoy mini tarts while learning about custom upholstery, with a focus on antiques.
On April 17, Basia Baklinski, from The Conservation Clinic, will discuss how to keep family documents, artwork and heirlooms in their best condition for future generations.
The last Wednesday of the month, April 24, will feature Kelly McDowell, a Master Gardener from Peterborough Medicine Gardeners, who will discuss plantings for the spring garden.
McDowell is also responsible for the Medicine Garden at Hutchison House. The Chocolate Rabbit will share truffle samples.
All “Pairings” events take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and admission is $10. For more, email info@hutchisonhouse.ca or call 705-743-9710.
