- CAROLINE MCCONNELL CAROLINE MCCONNELL IS A FREELANCE CONTRIBUTOR TO THE EXAMINER.

Registration is open for the Peterborough Butterfly Run that happens Sunday, April 28, and, if you want to proudly wear a race shirt on race day, you will need to register before April 5 at noon.

You will still be able to register after this date, but a shirt will not be included. You can register online by visiting PeterboroughButterflyRun.itsyourrace.com or in-person at Runner’s Life at 174 Charlotte St.

The event, which is organized by GPHSF, Your Family Health Team Foundation, in partnership with its race committee and the Partners In Pregnancy Clinic, takes place at Millennium Park. The day begins with registration opening at 9 a.m., followed by the 1K kids fun run at 10 a.m., 1K memorial walk at 10:20 a.m., opening ceremonies at 10:45 a.m. and the 5K chip-timed run/ walk at 11 a.m.

“The 2023 Peterborough Butterfly Run was the first year for our foundation taking a lead role in organizing the in-person event. We couldn’t be happier with how it turned out and the positive response we received,” said Vince Bierworth, executive director for the GPHSF, Your Family Health Team Foundation.

“Our return to a live event broke fundraising records with over 1,000 people participating and over $100,000 raised.”

Funds raised have been used to provide ongoing specialized education in perinatal bereavement care to health-care providers across Peterborough City and County, to establish more than 10 lending libraries, and for the development of bereavement kits for families and individuals who experience early and later pregnancy loss and infant loss. Since 2018, 800 of these kits have been created.

“Our hope for this year’s event is to engage even more people to support as many individuals and families as we can. However, we always strive to be as inclusive as possible. Which is why the free memorial walk continues to be part of the event along with the option to do the run/walk virtually. The cost to participate in the five-kilometre run/walk remains the same as last year, as well,” explained Bierworth.

Registration cost for the 1K kids fun run is $5 and the 5K run/walk is $45, plus applicable fees. All registrations include a medal and customizable race bib. Those registering for the 5K run/walk by April 5 receive the race shirt and other items in their race kit.

Dave Dame, from Runner’s Life, returns as the race director this year, utilizing his years of experience to make sure the day runs as smoothly and seamlessly as possible, says Bierworth.

The 2024 Peterborough Butterfly Run executive committee includes Kelly Ross, Jennie Vanier, Alessandra Friesen, Kori Zwarych and Ashley Hickson. The event is also supported by several other dedicated volunteers.
