Dragon Boat Festival

Registration is open for the 23rd edition of Peterborough’s Dragon Boat Festival, set to take place Saturday, June 8, at Del Crary Park. The festival is hosted by the Survivors Abreast dragon boat team and is a vital fundraiser for the PRHC Foundation.

“We’ve always focused on breast cancer awareness and raising funds for the Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC),” said Ann Stabler, president of the Survivors Abreast team, first created in 1999.

“We know firsthand the importance of the work the Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation does, and their continuing mission to bring the best cancer care the world has to offer, right here to our hospital.”

Proceeds from the 2024 festival will allow PRHC to invest in new state-of-the-art equipment and technology to serve more cancer patients, support earlier cancer diagnosis and provide safer, more effective treatments close to home.

Last year was a record-breaking one for the festival when $290,000 was donated to PRHC, making a total of $4 million in donations over the past 22 years.

“It is estimated that two out of five Canadians will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in their lifetime, and one in eight women will develop breast cancer,” said Michelle Thornton, Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival chair. “Our goal of $251,825.18 reflects these statistics and the importance of screening equipment and early detection.”

Kawartha Credit Union is the event’s presenting sponsor, marking its 23rd year in this role.

The day will feature the dragon boat races, artisan and food vendors, a family fun zone, a beer garden and more.
